Q. What are some good resources for choosing a career path or finding a specific job after finishing a military career?

1. Military.com Veteran Careers - Job board specifically for veterans includes postings from employers who are seeking retired and former military. (www.military.com)

2. TAOnline - Transition Assistance Online offers information and tools for those seeking employment after their military careers have ended. Offers information on military-friendly careers and employers, ex-military job fairs, info on the value of a military security clearance to potential employers, and a job search function for currently available positions for former military. (www.taonline.com)

3. Top 20 Jobs for Retired Military - Perhaps slightly dated, but this 2007 report offers thoughts on the best jobs for retired or retiring military members, including defense contractor analyst, network systems manager, field service engineer, trainer and other career ideas. (money.cnn.com)

4. Veterans’ Employment & Training Service - U.S. Department of Labor offers this service “to provide veterans and transitioning service members with the resources and services to succeed in the 21st century workforce by maximizing their employment opportunities, protecting their employment rights and meeting labor-market demands with qualified veterans.” This includes job training grants and other career assistance. 5. Post-Military Career Opportunities at Cintas - This company known for work uniforms and facility cleaning says it is “a major recruiter of transitioning military personnel from all branches of the service.” Click through to see the job opportunities available with them. (www.cintas.com)

6. Bradley-Morris, Inc. - This job placement firm specializes in helping ex-military find civilian jobs, and also helps employers who are particularly interested in hiring former military members. click through for more information on their services. (www.bradley-morris.com)

7. Allied Schools, Inc. - School offers distance learning education programs especially for former military or for active duty military personnel seeking training for post-military jobs. Continuing education programs include training for medical / health care careers, business/finance careers, and real estate professional careers. (www.education4military.com)

8. The Myth of Post-Military Employment - April, 2007 blog post by a former Marine discusses whether military experience is seen as valuable to civilian employers, concluding that it often isn’t, unless you’ve learned a very specialized skill very well, or are willing to move just about anywhere a relevant job is located. 9. Hire Patriots - This site promoting the hiring of ex-military members is a little confusing, but it does offer a job board amidst articles of varying degrees of helpfulness, though many of the jobs don’t seem to be geared toward ex-military in particular. (hirepatriots.com)
