Frequently Asked Questions

Actually these questions are only asked every so often, but you gotta stick to convention…

Why Bessed?

Best.com was taken.

What do you have to offer me that I can’t get anywhere else?

Who else lets you search the Web and comment on results, in real time?

Who else not only lets you find the best sites for whatever topic you’re interested in, but also lets you immediately discuss the topic with other like-minded individuals? No one, that’s who.

Who else will add your stinking Web site based solely on its quality, not on how many other sites link to it or how long your site’s been around? No one, that’s who.

Who else will… Actually, that’s all we can think of, but that’s three things which is pretty good.

Your site is pathetic. It barely has any topics at all.

That’s not a question exactly, but OK. We want your help to build this directory. Let us know (via the Add URL page) what you’re interested in, what topics you want to see that aren’t here yet, what sites/pages should be included, all that stuff. We’re building it, but we want you to tell us how.

And what do you have, like, 300 pages indexed?

You’re starting to get on our nerves, but we’ll play along. While quantity has its advantages, we’re looking for quality sites on each topic. All killer, no filler, you might say (but please don’t). To accomplish that, we need some human intervention, and us humans are slower than bots.

Also, it means no more than 100 sites/pages per topic. If you need more than that, it’s time to search for a more specific topic. Or just use Google for pete’s sake, everybody else does.

If you want us to build it, why can’t we just add sites ourselves?

Well, you can and you can’t. No, you can’t edit the page; this ain’t no wiki. But, yes, you can suggest topics and sites/pages within topics and we’ll respond. That response may be to add your suggestion, it might be to reject your suggestion, it might be to ask other commenters if your suggestion is a good one. It’s a little bit democratic and a little bit authoritarian — sort of like Donny & Marie if that makes any sense whatsoever to you.

What if I want to suggest a site, but don’t want to use the comments?

Tough tooties. If you’re going to suggest a site, you have to put it out there for all to see, not start spamming our inbox with lame suggestions.

What if my site is from outside the United States?

At this time Bessed only lists sites that target a U.S. audience. This does not disqualify every site from outside the United States, but only those sites that offer information or services of interest to a U.S. audience will be listed. (For example, a site by an Australian company of interest mainly to people in Australia would not qualify, while a site by an Australian company marketing a site on Australian tourist spots for travelers would be listed.) If you’re from outside of the U.S. and not sure if your site would be listed, just leave a comment on the Add URL page and we’ll let you know.

What if I have a question that isn’t asked so frequently?

Ask it in the comments section below and we’ll try to answer it down there in the comments as well. If your question starts to get asked frequently, can you guess where we’ll put it then?

Most people seem to be suggesting their own sites. Can a person suggest someone else’s site?

    Absolutely.

I think this is a great idea, but the “there needs to be more pages indexed” complaint is not an idle one. Leaving it up to user suggestion makes no sense; you search for things when you DON’T know what you’re looking for. A better system might be to have a large index and let people rate/comment AFTER they’ve found something.

I’d love to start using your site, but if 95% of the time when I search I get nothing and have to use Google, I start to think that I might as well use Google in the first place and just skip searching here.

Thanks for the comment, Grover. By no means are we simply waiting for visitors to tell us what searches to cover—the challenge is simply the fact that there are so many searches to cover, so obviously we still have many holes, with the overall index getting better over time. (It would help if we had a larger team, but that’s another story.)

The comments above about having you help us build Bessed are simply our way of saying we’d love it if you got involved, whether it’s telling us about your favorite Web sites or submitting your own Web site for inclusion. We’ll keep growing it whether you participate or not, though :)

It is March of 2008 and I have just come across this site accidentally. In reading the comments it seems to me that you, whomever you are, are attempting to create a service, and actually asking the users the for suggestions on the format, as well as certain subjects that will help them in whatever they do. All I have read above, are cranky comments and self-righteous complaints about what hasn’t been done. For Pete’s Sake, what part of ‘new’ and ‘building’ and ‘help’ and ’suggestions’ don’t they undertand.

I have been battleing Macy’s Department Store all day about a return that I made where my money actually went through back to my debit bank within two days. HOWEVER, the credit for the returns never made it to my Macy’s accounts meaning that they are showing that I still owe for them. They also keep adding a late fee each month. I would owe nothing if this were corrected.

Guess what…the credit department business is farmed out to INJA and while they can speak English, i don’t think they understand it.

Wouldn’t it be great to take all these big outfits that have outsourced all their internal business and put them in a big file. Inside would be certain things listed beside each entry, such as whom to call with credit i nquiries. I alsoo need the president of the company and whoever is managing the credit department.

For 30 minutes today, I talked to a Jacob Watson who is a supervisor for Macy’s explaining to him I had returned merchandise and had actually dollars returned to my debit account, that i had a copy for all of the entries and what should I do next. His next question was
‘was this a return or a payment?” The man is a supervisor and can’t understand English. By this time I was annoyed enough that that is what I politely told him.

Yessir, a way to find out exactly who is responsible for things in different corporation…wouldn’t that be loverly?

I have not even looked to see if you are a success and wioll do so now.
